Today's cooking has evolved so much with air fryers, coffee warmers and smart technology, greatly reducing the time spent in the kitchen and saving energy, but this does not mean that the new additions are healthy. Well, whether you're choosing to take advantage of the savings in time or you're old-fashioned and prefer to cook with precise control over everything, leaving nothing to chance or a machine, shall we say! There are some staple kitchen items which we all use regardless of the season, cost or advancements. These items should be investment pieces as they are often cheaply made by manufacturers to sell in supermarkets and online, at the expense of our health and safety. Here are some eco-friendly kitchen appliances, utensils and gadgets and non-toxic cookware.
Plastic and Silicone Utensils Tools - If you do not like the sound of microplastics being in your food, swap these for stainless steel or wood, the former being an excellent alternative in minimising bacteria. And you can forget the non-stick products, less mess of course, but they also release perfluorooctanoic acid into food. An excellent hard-wearing substitute is stainless steel utensils.
The Not So Eco-Friendly, storage containers - Bamboo, also often labelled as a green and organic product, many of these products are made from melamine plastic with added bamboo fibres. Replace bread bins and containers with Borosilicate glass containers.
Plastic Kitchen Roll Holders - swap for FSC-certified wood kitchen roll holders avoid the off-gassing associated with plastics.
Aluminium Pots and Pans - An immediate concern for anyone cooking, especially with young children, instead opt for cast iron items or stainless steel cookware.
These are some considerations for more eco-friendly product swaps, timeless investment pieces!
