The environmental impact of landfill waste and the extensive emissions it creates are alarming. However, as you or your loved one prepare to leave college, you have the power to make a significant difference. By considering how to declutter those four years of college in a sustainable manner, you are taking a responsible step toward a greener future.

Prepare

Sort through the items you will keep and those finding a new home. You could sort them like this:

Keeping - These are items you will use later

Donate or Give to Family or Friend - Items that you no longer need but are in good condition

Sale - Items that can be resold and are in excellent condition, perhaps unused

Recycle -  Divert textile waste from polluting the environment by recycling.

Trade-in Your Unwanted Electronics - As you leave college, you may want to upgrade to better electronics

Donate any unwanted books - Libraries and services like Paperback Swap would be great places to give old textbooks.

Prioritize Reusing Items - It's not just about reducing waste, it's about getting creative and finding new uses for old items. Repurpose what no longer works, and get creative with items that can no longer be used for their original purpose. For example, an old pen cup can be transformed into a toothbrush holder in your new apartment with a little wrapping or non-toxic paint; this is a circular economy at its best, and it's a choice that can make you feel good about your sustainable lifestyle.

Recycle where possible - If you cannot donate or sell, recycle it. Amassing e-waste, clothing, metal and plastic

Make sure hazardous waste is recycled; this will ensure that the waste is disposed of safely and effectively; this includes batteries and medical waste.

Make sure old clothing and shoes find the right home - there are a lot of companies. For damaged clothes, use The American Textile Recycling Service. For unwanted Worn sneakers: Soles4Souls. For more oversized furniture items like chairs and mattresses, use The Furniture Bank

These are just some ways to move out of your dorm sustainably. Hopefully, these principles will serve you throughout your professional life.
