Researchers (National Veterinary School of Toulouse, France) have discovered that wallpaper can contain airborne fungi, which poses a health risk, especially to anyone with respiratory diseases.
Wallpapers can also be harmful, as some contain contaminants like microplastics, lead, mercury, or chlorine. This is known as 'off-gassing,' which is the emission of chemicals as gases or fumes into the environment.
So, how can you reduce or eliminate exposure to harmful wallpapers?
Look for wallpapers with a third-party certification, such as GreenGuard GOLD or Nordic Swan Ecolabel. That will ensure that your wallpaper has been checked against rigorous criteria of testing standards.
Look for wallpaper with low-VOC (Volatile organic compounds), which means less than 5 grams per liter.
Ensure that your home is getting adequate air changes per hour (Air Change Rate); this is the rate at which fresh air is being introduced to the home. If your fresh air supply is mainly served mechanically, get the engineer to check that your system provides enough fresh air at tour when you get it checked or serviced.
